Household Cleaners to Disinfect your Swansea home
3/16/2020 (Permalink)
To properly disinfect your home, using any EPA-registered (environmental protection agency) products is recommended. Be sure you are using products appropriate for each surface!
If you don't have any proper disinfectants, some household items can work!
Make a bleach solution with:
- 1/3 cup of bleach per 1 gallon of water
- 4 teaspoons of bleach per 1 quart of water
Be sure the area you are using this bleach solution in is well ventilated!
NEVER mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. This will create very dangerous vapors that should not be breathed in.
Areas that are "high-touch" should be cleaned often, every day ideally.
These areas include:
- Doorknobs
- Light switches
- Desks
- Toilets
- Faucets
- Remotes
When using EPA registered products, make sure you're checking the time the surface should remain wet to kill all germs possible. Click here for a list of EPA registered disinfectants.
Vinegar is also a natural, household item that you probably already have that is a great disinfecting agent! It has been shown to kill germs. The acid that is in vinegar is what kills the bacteria and viruses.
Mix water and vinegar at a 1:1 ratio.
When using vinegar as a disinfectant, it is important to note that it needs to be in contact with the surface for at least 20 minutes. 30 minutes is ideal. The best vinegar to use to kill flu like viruses is white vinegar because it is the most acidic.
It's also important to note that it isn't recommended to use your vinegar solution on natural stone (marble), cast iron, or aluminum.
Hydrogen peroxide is also great at killing germs! It's naturally antibacterial! Just be careful when using this, it can stain clothes and porous surfaces (such as marble). Hydrogen peroxide should be used diluted with water.
